Astronomy materials needed in developing nations
Greetings from Darrel Hoff. I am asking for you assistance to further astronomy education efforts in developing countries. As a member of Commision 46 (Education) of the International Astronomical Union I have accepted the responsibility of arranging donations of astronomy education materials for deserving people in developing nations. In this capacity I collect surplus teaching materials from my American colleagues and redistribute them to people who contact me from countries in need. These materials can consist of materials that serve a wide range of audiences all the way from the elementary level to the university undergraduate or even graduate level. (English is becoming the international language and so American materials are very much accepted.) These can consist of books, magazines or aparatuses. (apararti?) So far I have sent materials to Peru, Panama, Brazil, Moldavia and I even hand carried a telescope and books for a childrens' science center in Kenya. I normal use international surface M-bag mail and fund the shiping myself.
If you have materials that are surplus to you and would like to donate I ask you first to contact me before you send anything. I ask you to pay your own shipping to me. (Use the cheaper book rate.) I can supply you with an inkind donataion statement for you to use with your IRS records. I then will store the materials until I get requests from overseas.
My e-mail office address is hoffdar@luther.edu.
Peace,
Darrel
